Hit by Comment Spam?

Have you recently seen an increase in comments on your wordpress blog? I have experineced a sudden  increase in number of comments on couple of my blogs.  Some comments were made on very posts.  Quite a few of them were just generic comments ” Nice Site, Great Article , thanks”

One of the blog spammer posted identical comments on two different sites which are not linked in any way.  This raised suspicion, so it was time to swtich to research mode for me. I checked that only the blogs that have comment plugins installed have been hit by this new kind of spam.  Comment plugins  like  “Nofollow Free” ,  “KeywordLuv”, “Commentluv” and “Top Comment”. Blogs that do not have any of the above plugins are luckily not affected with such spam.

Upon digging a bit more ,  I could see that the referrer logs showed that many of these “out of the blue commentors” reached my site using specific search string on google.

These plugins have dofollow attribute which gives a nice linkback to the spammers website and If any of your pages have a good pagerank, expect the unexpected commentors blasting your blog comments. I have actually responded to a few of them, as few write it as if they are genuine readers of my blog post or lets say they know how it pretend to be so. Akismet does block few of these kind of spam comment but many escape. I personally have no problem giving credit to the commentor by providing them a linkback, but if the reader’s sole intention is to gain a backlink to their site. I would just say ” Good Luck, try else”.

It is really pity that huge lists of such do follow supported blog are floating around all over the web. And to add to it some people are selling such kind of blog comment spamming software. I hope this comes to and end soon, else blog owners will have a hard tim.
